The workshop Como melhorar o acesso à informação científica e técnica em saúde nos países de língua portuguesa: o modelo da Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS) (How to improve access to scientific and technical health information in Portuguese-speaking countries: the Virtual Health Library (VHL) model) aims to contribute to democratizing access to scientific and technical health information with an emphasis on the Portuguese language.

The workshop will address the VHL model of managing scientific and technical information to promote strengthening of national capacities in Portuguese-speaking countries to operate national, regional and international networks of sources and flows of information.

It is an effort of the ePORTUGUÊSe network, coordinated by the World Health Organization (WHO) and designed to establish a coalition of institutions to disseminate information on health with an emphasis on Portuguese, as well as to promote health through several means, facilitating the translation of knowledge into practice, helping to overcome language barriers and bridging the know-do gap.

The development of these actions is based on implementing the VHL for management of scientific and technical information and knowledge on health, in a compatible and interoperating fashion in Portuguese-speaking countries. The VHL is coordinated by the BIREME/PAHO/WHO - Latin American and Caribbean Center on Health Sciences Information, which is also responsible for organizing and carrying out the event that will be a historical landmark in technical cooperation from South to South.

The event is supported by the Brazilian Ministry of Health, WHO and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), by its Representation in Brazil.

The public opening ceremony will be held in the morning of June 11, 2007 and be attended by many authorities, national and international representatives. On the following days, the workshop will be restricted to representatives of the countries and institutions invited. Check the complete program.

The program comprises theoretical and practical activities, using methodologies and technologies that enable effective participation. The attendees will also have an online cooperative work space that may continue after the event to keep sharing experiences about VHL implementation in their countries.
